This fascinating exhibition explores the history of J.M.W. Turner’s painting Margate(?), from the Sea (1835–40), and explains the complex legacy of his will and the large body of work known as the Turner Bequest.
Join us in Turner’s Garden to paint the outside view of Turner’s greatest artwork, Sandycombe Lodge, and create your own masterpiece. The garden is in full Spring swing, and your ticket will include refreshments, materials and private out of hours access to Turner’s House. All levels welcome.
This lecture series will give the opportunity to dive deeper into the story of Turner’s bequest, his legacy today, and the relation with Margate. All lectures will be online and recorded. In 1807 J.M.W. Turner, then a young but already well-known and commercially successful painter, bought two plots of land on the edges of two large estates between Twickenham and Richmond Bridge.

Turner used this peaceful spot, with no other buildings nearby, to retreat from the pressures of the London art world, to walk and sketch along the Thames, to fish with one or two close companions, and occasionally to entertain larger groups of friends.
